The Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek is a newly opened, off-the-beaten-path route in the Langtang region, developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program (RPAP). This trek offers a unique chance to experience the ancient lifestyle of the Tamang people while enjoying stunning natural landscapes.
Trekking along this route, you’ll gain insight into Tamang culture, deeply connected to Tibetan heritage. Most Tamangs are farmers or traders, and their villages are dotted along scenic trails that pass through dense forests, vibrant rhododendron blooms (in season), green meadows, cascading waterfalls, and sacred lakes such as Gosai Kunda and Bhirab Kunda.
Your journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubensi, where the trek starts toward Gatlang. Perched on a hillside with terraced fields, Gatlang is home to a Tamang monastery and the sacred Parvati Kunda Lake. From Gatlang, the trail leads to Tatopani, a town famous for its natural hot springs believed by locals to have healing properties.
Next, you’ll reach Thuman, known for its open grasslands, panoramic Himalayan views, and rich shamanic traditions. From Thuman, the trek follows an old trade route to Tibet, arriving at Briddim, a close-knit Tamang community just three hours from the border. Here, you can visit the Dukchu Gompa monastery and interact with the locals.
Continuing along the classic Langtang Valley, the path leads to Lama Hotel, passing through lush forests where you may spot red pandas. From Lama Hotel, you trek to Langtang Village via Ghoda Tabela army check post and Chyamiki Village. Langtang, a traditional Tamang settlement, offers insight into local life and culture.
The final leg of the trek takes you to Kyanjin Gompa, passing small plateaus, yak pastures, and villages. You’ll have an extra day to explore Kyanjin Gompa, visit monasteries, tour the cheese factory, or climb Tserko Ri for breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Langtang II (6,586m), and surrounding peaks.
