The Annapurna Circuit trek, located in the heart of Nepal’s central mountain ranges, spans between 160–230 km (100–145 mi), depending on the use of motor transportation and the chosen endpoint. This iconic route crosses two major river valleys and fully encircles the Annapurna Massif, offering trekkers stunning views of snow-capped peaks and diverse landscapes. The trek’s highest point is the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), which lies at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Most trekkers prefer hiking the circuit anticlockwise, as this allows for a gentler daily altitude gain and a safer, easier crossing of Thorong La.
The Annapurna Circuit has been recognized as one of the world’s best long-distance treks, thanks to its remarkable range of climates and cultures. From the lush tropical lowlands at 600 m to the alpine terrain near 5,416 m, and from traditional Hindu villages in the foothills to the Tibetan-influenced Manang Valley and lower Mustang, the trek offers unparalleled diversity.
Recent road construction, including the Besisahar–Manang road, has shortened parts of the trail and altered some villages. These developments have also made the region increasingly popular for mountain biking, especially in Mustang, providing new ways to explore this extraordinary landscape.
