Tilicho Peak Expedition

33 Days 32 Nights

Tilicho Peak (7,134m) Expedition is one of the most attractive and demanding 7,000-meter expeditions in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Located approximately 210 km west of Kathmandu, this impressive peak captivates climbers with its dramatic landscape and challenging ascent. Tilicho Peak was first successfully climbed in 1978 by Mr. Emanuel Schmutz as part of a French expedition. He reached the summit via the Northwest Shoulder, which is now recognized by the Government of Nepal and the Department of Tourism as the standard climbing route.

Tilicho Peak forms the highest point of the Great Barrier, linking Khangsar Kang (7,458m) and Nilgiri North (7,061m). The mountain lies close to the Annapurna massif and was first identified in 1950 by an expedition led by Maurice Herzog during his search for Annapurna I.

The Tilicho Peak Climbing Expedition is considered one of the more challenging climbs among Nepal’s 7,000-meter peaks. The journey follows the classic Annapurna Circuit trekking route up to Manang Village, then continues toward Tilicho Lake, approaching the mountain via Khangsar and Besi Khola. The gradual ascent provides excellent acclimatization before reaching base camp.

From Base Camp, climbers establish two to three high camps for the summit push. The route from Base Camp to Camp I (5,800m / 19,029ft) is relatively straightforward. Camp I is located on a shelf below the Northwest Shoulder, just above a 45-degree mixed rock and ice section. Camp II (6,100m) lies on the shoulder and is accessed by climbing a 500-meter snowfield with a 50-degree incline. The shoulder itself extends for about 700 meters at a similar angle, offering low objective danger and minimal exposure due to its wide terrain. Fixed ropes are required, especially when approaching Camp II and Camp III (around 6,300m).

The standard approach to Tilicho Peak’s Advanced Base Camp begins from Besisahar, following the Marsyangdi Valley. This trek takes approximately 8 days and allows for proper acclimatization. After summiting Tilicho Peak, climbers have two main return options. One route involves a 4-day trek over Thorong La Pass (5,416m), followed by a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, then a drive back to Kathmandu. The alternative is the more demanding Mesokanto La Pass (5,300m), before descending to Jomsom and flying to Pokhara.

From the summit, climbers are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the Annapurna massif, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Lake, the Tibetan Plateau, and the Kali Gandaki Valley, known as the deepest gorge in the world.
